(This article is comprised of my own opinions and may not be scientifically or audically correct.)

Recently, i’ve noticed that people have often been getting rid of large amounts of vinyl records. This is a article in defense of the vinyl format and how it is still viable. First off lets list some Pros and Cons about Vinyl Records:

PROS:

* More space for album art in a larger disk format.

* Higher quality (Debatable) and warmer sound than CD due to analog equiptment.

* Physical playback allows higher control to those wanting to use the speed or slow down the song. This also allows one to pick a specific portion of a song to listen to with ease.

* Songs play all together, but it is also possible to choose a single track quite easily.

* Nowadays (Mid 2009) you can acquire records for cheaper than CDs most of the time. Although many artists are not releasing vinyl’s anymore, many still are and are available for the same or possible slightly more than the price of a CD.

CONS:

* Scratching and warping is much easier than it is on a CD

* Less capacity for music.

* CDs can also hold data as well as music. There aren’t many vinyl data readers, are there? (Personal Note, Interesting Project.)

* Usually when listening to a vinyl, you have to turn over the record to hear the second side. This is always the case unless you have two turntables and two of the same vinyls.

* Vinyls take up more shelf space than CDs.

* Record player’s heads often wear out, more often than CD readers. This is either because it has to physically touch the record or due to age of the equiptment.

* Production of a physical record is a long and tedious. It involves the making of a master, which then has a silver duplicate made for pressing, then taking polyvinyl biscuits, pressing them under high heat to achieve the grooves.

I leave you to make your own descision when choosing to buy a vinyl or a CD.
